I’d like to start off by congratulating all six people out there who had Davis Love III this week.  Really nice work, guys.  Next, I’d like to apologize to anyone who hopped aboard the Billy Ho train with me.  What a colossal failure that pick was.  Finally, a little bit of positive news… the Drive the Green GPP didn’t finish in a tie this week!  HOORAY!  jwbaucom03 went with the “blast from the past” strategy, and it paid off big time.

Davis Love III (0.5%) $5,800 – 133.5
Webb Simpson (14.4%) $9,500 – 115.5
Carl Pettersson (10.9%) $8,400 – 109.5
Brooks Koepka (41.4%) $10,300 – 108.5
Charl Schwartzel (7.1%) $8,900 – 105.5
Vijay Singh (2.0%) $6,600 – 75

Geriatric was the play this week, and it netted jwbaucom03 a cool $100,000.

One interesting thing to note about this lineup: it featured three players with North Carolina roots.  Love and Simpson were both born in NC, and Pettersson went to NC State.  When the Wyndham Championship rolls around next year, I’m going to be focusing a little more on the Tar Heels.

This was another week where the optimal play was to leave a ton of money on the table.

Brooks Koepka $10,800 – 108.5
Webb Simpson $9,500 – 115.5
Carl Pettersson $8,400 – 109.5
Scott Brown $6,300 – 121
Jason Gore $6,100 – 114
Davis Love III $5,800 – 133.5

That’s a whopping 702 points on $46,900 spent.  I know a lot of you out there have problems with letting that much salary seemingly go to waste, but golf is a different animal than the other sports.  There is an insane amount of week-to-week production variance; much more than NBA or NFL.  Just look at the past two weeks…  Jason Day wins with a $10k price tag and the largest ownership number in the field, then Davis Love III wins with a $6k price tag and an ownership of less than one percent.  With respect to other sports, there’s a closer relationship between price and production.  If you spend up, you are reasonably sure you’re getting more production.  In golf, it’s really just about being on the right guys at the right time.  I know that sounds overly simplistic, but it’s the truth.  Also, we’ve reached a point in the Millionaire Makers (and even the Drive the Greens) where ties are commonplace.  If you leave $3k on the table, you’re almost assuredly going to have a unique lineup.  Just something to think about.

It was a tough week for the experts; this was one of the lowest scoring weeks for them I’ve seen.  Let’s take a look at how the Consensus did.

Eh… not great.  It did a great job of identifying high-priced talent, but no player on that list below $8k returned better than “C” value (and only 40% of them made the cut).  This was the first week I used a tier system to break up the picks.  It’s a small sample, but in week one: more chatter = more points.  Just something to consider going forward.

Even though this wasn’t the Consensus’ best week, only one expert really outperformed it.  stlcardinals84 of rotogrinders.com recommended a solid group of four golfers to build your lineups around.

If you used those four guys and were able to identify a couple value plays on your own, you probably did pretty well for yourself this week.

The FedEx Cup starts this week!  I’ll be back tomorrow with some thoughts on The Barclays.  Until then…
