NOTE: We will NOT have an NBA Industry Consensus article or NBA Consensus Lineup Construction article today due to the varied NBA schedule on Martin Luther King Day. We will resume on Tuesday.

We finally have a leader in the overall standings hold onto first place for consecutive weeks, although it is by the narrowest of margins. I have also added a new section at the bottom of the article that shows the results of our new endeavor to produce lineups based on the Industry Consensus picks each night we grade the experts. The first week was a little rocky, but I expect us to improve as we get more data on the best way to utilize the Consensus picks to construct winning lineups.

In this article, I will give a brief recap of each day we gathered and graded the experts, including how the Industry Consensus picks did, highlighting which experts were at the top for the day and which players were only called out by one or two experts, but produced an “A+” grade. I will also review the overall standings, highlighting the top experts so far this season. You can view the full NBA Overall Standings here.

As a reminder, we are currently gathering selections and publishing the NBA Industry Consensus articles and NBA Consensus Lineup Construction articles each Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday during the NBA season, so be sure to check back about an hour or so before the first game tips off to get a look at the consensus picks for the day.

Consensus Lineup Construction Review

We started a new feature at DailyOverlay this week, where writers on our staff utilize the daily Industry Consensus article picks to build a sample DFS lineup for FanDuel and DraftKings.

Here is a list of the “rules” we are starting with when constructing the lineups:

  1. All players in our lineups come from the names listed in our consensus article, if possible. However, if one of those players is ruled out and we have time to put in that player’s backup or a player around the same salary, we will pivot to that player.
  2. We must use as many of the “Highly Touted” and “Recommended” players as possible, then fill in the remaining salary with players from the ”Suggested” player list. All of us submitting lineups will have some subjectivity to who we play based on the matchup when we need to fill out the remaining portion of our rosters.

We will have at least 1 DraftKings and 1 FanDuel lineup every night we write the Consensus article and enter them into a Cash (50/50) league and large-field GPP tournament. The results of those lineups will be provided in this section each week.

Weekly Results

FanDuel

Day Score Cash Profit(Loss) GPP Profit(Loss) Picks By
Monday 274.7 3/100 $1.60 6,518/172,414 $4.00 Brad
Tuesday 300.1 17/100 $1.60 21,121/172,303 $2.00 Matt
Wednesday 234.1 91/100 ($2.00) 106,420/143,678 ($2.00) Brad
Friday 236.3 72/100 ($2.00) 100,304/143,678 ($2.00) Matt
Total 261.3 (avg) ($0.80) $2.00

The FanDuel lineups started out strong on Monday and Tuesday cashing in both the 50/50 and GPP tournaments. The Wednesday and Friday lineups didn’t fare as well. Overall for the week, the FanDuel lineups netted a $1.20 profit for a solid ROI: 7.5%.

DraftKings

Day Score Cash Profit(Loss) GPP Profit(Loss) Picks By
Monday 229.50 14,104/24,294 ($1.00) 56,516/143,750 ($3.00) Stephen
Tuesday 206.25 20/20 ($2.00) 5,332/5,750 ($2.00) Stephen
Wednesday 197.25 20/20 ($2.00) 5,086/5,750 ($2.00) Stephen
Friday 238.50 667/1,136 ($2.00) 2,683/5,750 ($2.00) Stephen
Total 217.88 ($7.00) ($9.00)

The DraftKings lineups proved to be more challenging as they did not cash all week. With the extra lineup flexibility and tighter pricing the DraftKings lineups might take some time to master using the Consensus picks.

Overall, I expect to see improvements to our results as we accumulate more data on how to best utilize the Industry Consensus picks to construct optimal lineups. We may also explore producing different lineups between Cash and GPP leagues down the road.
